What is Fitwel?
Fitwel is the world’s leading certification system for buildings and communities that optimize projects to support health. The Fitwel standard was generated by expert analysis of over 5,600 academic research studies, and it is implementing a vision for a healthier future where all buildings and communities are enhanced to strengthen health and wellbeing.
Why did ARIA pursue certification?
ESG is an integral part of our business. We want our building to have a positive health impact on the lives we touch.
We spend 90% of our time indoors and there is a lot of research on how buildings can positively or negatively affect people. Some notable benefits include more productivity, less sick days, elevated mood and comfort, less stress, and better sleep.
The scorecard and strategies are weighted against Fitwel’s seven Health Impact Categories: Impacts community, reduces morbidity and absenteeism, supports social equality for vulnerable populations, increases physical activity, promotes occupant safety, provides healthy food options, instills feelings of well-being.
Healthy aspects of our building that contributed to our certification
ARIA received credit in various strategies, one being building location with a Walk Score of 90 or above. ARIA is located in the University District, and is a 10-minute walk to the University of Calgary campus and multiple retail, shopping and restaurant options. Walkable locations can increase opportunities for regular physical activity, social interaction, and access to amenities, fostering improved health.
ARIA offers access to 20,000 sq.ft of outdoor space, equipped with a pickleball court, bocce court, firepit & BBQs, fountain and pet play area. This increases opportunities for regular physical activity and exposure to daylight, contributing to enhanced mental health.
